Upper and
Lower Canada

Confused about how the names Upper and Lower Canada came to be?  Map locations make it even more confusing because Upper Canada (Ontario) is lower on the map than Lower Canada (Quebec).  We took the question to the Archives of Ontario and got this answer.

Thank you for taking the time to write and for your kind words about our web site. It is believed the names Upper and Lower Canada actually stem from where they were located on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence water system. Since transportation in those days was very much dependent on water routes, they played an important role in how countries developed. And, since Upper Canada was further "up river" that's how the names were determined.

You are absolutely right, it would make a worthwhile addition to our web site. We will work on fitting it in somewhere. Thanks again for your interest.

Best regards.
