Engine 5588
The Spirit of Windsor

Engine 5588, the Spirit of Windsor which is located on Riverside Dr at Windsor's Dieppe Park, was found at the CN Railyards in London Ontario by members of the Canadian Transportation Museum in 1961.

The museum members remember that about 75 steam locomotives were there ready to be busted up and turned into scrap. Three engines were available for sale (engine 5588, its twin and one more larger engine).

The group negotiated a price of approxmiately $3500. The members which included Jim Moir and Don Beneteau arranged to transport the steam engine to Windsor, have it restored, created a campaign to raise funds to pay for its permanent mounting on display in Dieppe Park, and of course to have the engine purchased.

The fund raising campaign involved the help of the Windsor Daily Star and realtor Bob Pedler.
