Grade 3 Teachers: Bring your Class to Experience the Past!

Pioneer Life

Students discover what pioneer life was like by exploring Heritage Village and participating in hands-on activities related to the early settlement of Essex County. Students will make their own butter and enjoy early settler foods such as bannock bread around the fireplace of an authentic 1826 pioneer log home. But the chores aren't done! Students also make their own candles while learning about the labour involved in producing light for the family home. In the turn-of-the-century schoolhouse, students experience what school was like for our early settlers including penmanship practice using an old fashioned nib pen. As they spend the afternoon touring through the village, students gain an appreciation of community life for our early settlers.

The program is available Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm, April through June and September through mid-November. The program can also be condensed for a half-day visit. Call the office to enquire about full and half-day programs. Cost: $5.00 per student, no charge for teachers and chaperones.

Grade 6 Teachers: Discover the Exciting World of Trade and Motion!

Time Traders and Motion Rules

The Grade 6 program has been designed to closely follow the Grade 6 Curriculum and incorporate more hands-on participation and fun! Using the Canadian Transportation Museum facilities, students will spend half the day learning about the principles of motion and the rest of the day learning about the importance and history of trade for the exploration and development of Canada.

During the Motion program, students take a ride through the evolution of transportation. Using items found in the Transportation Museum, they then investigate and identify the science behind various types of motion and discover how mankind's progress is related to worldwide innovations in mobility.

In the Time Traders session, students learn about the early history of Canada, particularly the importance of trade in our country's development. By examining the history of Canada's First Nations peoples and the early exploration of North America by European adventurers, students will discover more about the development of the country we call home.

The program is available Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm, January through March. The program can also be condensed for a half-day visit. Call the office to enquire about full and half-day programs. Cost: $5.00 per student, no charge for teachers and chaperones.
